African Building Partners (ABP) was awarded a special mention by the Steel Awards panel for its structural work on the large steel roof of a church in Ghana. The building, which was intended for use as both a large church and conference venue, had stood idle for years. This was until the team at ABP recommended an innovative and cost-effective solution to the church association.
The large and aesthetically challenging roof structure could only be completed with the use of MiTek’s LGS – Ultra-Span roof trusses which were supported on a spinal hot-rolled steel support girder and on perimeter concrete ring beams, as the original specification would have required an additional 96 tons of steel, which is not easily available in Ghana.
The use of MiTek’s Ultra-Span solution resulted in a considerable cost saving to the client in terms of material and time. The Church Association led by Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams, was so thankful to the team from ABP that they have issued a special letter of recommendation and appreciation for their services and support.
W&R interviewed the Project Engineer, Stephan Coret & Managing Director of ABP, Eric Gene for more insight on this unique roofing project.
Q: What structural framing was used?
ABP: We used the spinal support structure, which is a three-legged frame of hot-rolled steel sections which was designed by local engineers using the load information from MiTek Ultra-Span roof design.
Q: What difficulties or challenges did you have to overcome?
ABP: The biggest challenge was the local design and construction of the hot-rolled spinal steel girder structure due to a lack of local skills and material supply issues. It took almost two months to complete, whereas the actual assembly and installation of the complete Ultra-Span roof structure only took one month. The immense time savings were achieved by the Ultra-Span roof structure through the pre-assembly of complete roof portions and lifting these into their position by crane.
Q: What is most impressive about this project from a technical perspective?
ABP: The ability to recreate the architect’s vision for an unusually aesthetic roof structure that had challenged the local skills and was only able to come to reality by using the Ultra-Span LGS roof system.
Q: What is special/unusual/innovative/aesthetic about the steelwork in this project?
ABP: The unique requirements of this structure aptly demonstrated the versatility of Ultra-Span in complementing other steel products in a hybrid system, in this instance Hot Rolled Steel.
Only through the involvement of the MiTek licenced Ultra-Span manufacturer, African Building Partners, could this project be completed expertly and with cost savings to the 100% satisfaction of the end-client.
MiTek’s Marketing Manager, Hennie Viljoen, congratulated the team from ABP with special mention in the Steel Awards. He noted: “The fact that the team from ABP puts so much faith into our Ultra-Span project, as well as their extraordinary dedication and going the extra mile for their client, speaks volumes about ABP’s work ethic and client care. We want to congratulate the team for their excellence!”
