Media in Africa and Floors in Africa would like to express our heartfelt sorrow – and simultaneously celebrate the life of Dave Soons – our journalist and writer who passed away in October 2013.

Dave, who was 81, had been working with the team at Floors in Africa for 16 years and he will be sorely missed by our editorial team as well as all the clients, contractors and design professionals who came to know and like him over the years.

Dave started at Floors in Africa as a proofreader in 1997 and soon thereafter was promoted to news editor. “Our very first feature was on Laminates. They were the new kids on the block, but Dave was enthusiastic and made it his job to understand everything there was to know about the laminate flooring industry,” recalls Liezel van der Merwe, managing editor at Floors in Africa.

“Dave was a great strategist and a realist. He was a clear thinker that was able to offer valuable input in order to ensure we reached our vision of building excellent communication vehicles for the construction, architecture and design industry,” adds Liezel before adding that Dave also wrote for Walls and Roofs magazine (which also falls under the Media in Africa umbrella).

Dave Soons was instrumental in many of Floors in Africa’s endeavours; from launching a website for the first time to being a contributor to the first ever SA Flooring Awards.

The team at Media in Africa saw Dave as a weapon of mass instruction. “Dave was a professional on so many levels. He was always able to gather information and craft interesting articles that would intrigue our audience. Dave helped professionals all over the country stay on top of developments and trends in the flooring industry,” says Roxanne Mancini, editor.

“He was loved by all of us at Media and by all of our clients. He was part of the industry’s family. They knew they could trust him to convey information correctly and so be instrumental in growing companies! He really was a legend and we are going to miss him so much,” says Roxanne.

Dave has written billions of words that have been published in numerous newspapers, consumer and trade magazines. He was an accomplished cartoonist and many of his cartoons have been printed.

Dave was an avid Tottenham Hotspur football supporter, a fan of traditional jazz music and a wildlife enthusiast.

He met the love of his life, Eileen Morton, in 1956. They married in 1959 and had two children; they shared 54 happy years together.

Dave will forever more leave his positive mark on the people who were blessed to have known him.
