Improving skills and career paths in SA flooring

The Flooring Industry Training Association (FITA) is the official facilitator of accredited training for flooring installers. The Construction and Education Training Authority (CETA) has formed a partnership with FITA and the two associations have established a pilot project that is aimed at improving skills, creating career paths and increasing employability of people in the built environment.

From 2018, FITA will maintain a register of South African flooring installers and their qualifications. FITA strongly encourages contractors across all flooring types to register both their company and installers with the association and apply for an official designation. Designations indicate the level of an installer’s expertise and the skills they can be held accountable for.

FITA is also offering a unique opportunity to flooring installation companies. The association has a limited number of free Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) assessments for the staff of companies who are registered with them. Flooring installers who have completed the RPL assessment, which currently covers basic carpeting and vinyl installation, will receive a government recognised qualification as well as recognition for their experience. Funding for this project was received from CETA.

Installers not registered with FITA can also RPL for a subsidised cost of R2 500. Assessments are scheduled for two weeks of the month from March till July
