Impact-resistance flooring

The Department of Basic Education partnered with Transfrontier Projects to replace worn-out flooring with a new, impact-resistant coating.

High-performance products from Sika, a global leader in construction chemicals, provided a robust and lasting solution for the department’s flooring needs.

Surface preparation

The existing floor coating was worn in all high-traffic areas, where examination and education materials are frequently moved with trolleys.

Existing coatings were removed with diamond grinders, resulting in an open pore concrete surface, conducive to bonding the new screed to the concrete substrate.

Good preparation is crucial for the effective application of all new coatings and screeds.

Solutions

High-traffic areas

  • Sikadur®-52ZA, a low-viscosity epoxy resin with high strength, was used to repair shrinkage cracks by means of gravity feed into the cracks.
  • Sikafloor®-21 Purcem, a high-performance, impact-resistant polyurethane hybrid self-smoothing screed designed for heavy-traffic areas, was used as both a 1mm scratch coat and final 5mm screed layer.

Medium-traffic areas

  • Sikafloor®-263 SL ZA, a two-part epoxy self-smoothing coating for smooth and broadcasted flooring surfaces, was used for the passages and offices.

Light-traffic areas

  • Sikafloor® Garage, a versatile, easy-to-apply, water-based coating ideal for light- to medium-traffic areas, was used in the storerooms and UPS rooms.

Parking decks

  • Damaged concrete surfaces were cut out and defective areas were primed with Sika MonoTop®-1010 ZA, a cementitious bonding primer.
  • Sika MonoTop®-412 NFG, a high-strength, shrinkage-compensated repair mortar, was used to level out the primed areas.

Joint sealing

  • All joints were raked out, cleaned and primed with Sika® Primer-3 N.
  • Joints were filled with Sikaflex® 11FC Purform.
