How FNB smoothed and levelled the floors for their HQ revamp

First National Bank’s headquarters recently underwent an extensive R236 million refurbishment which entailed the resurfacing of 28 000m² of flooring. Top Carpets and Floors Pretoria installed TAL Screedmaster Industrial, a single component, high performance heavy-duty, self-levelling and smoothing underlayment compound on the floors.

Surface preparation necessitated lifting all old carpeting and removing the residual carpet glue by means of a concrete floor grinder. This process left the existing substrate too uneven to receive new carpet tiles, which is why TAL’s product was specified to smooth and level the surface.

When added to water, the product’s high flow properties require minimum installation time and produce a smooth, flexible and durable floor surface prior to the fixing of floor coverings. The floor is trafficable after three hours and is sufficiently cured to receive floor coverings after only 24 hours.

Screed buckets were filled with the specified mixing ratio of 2 x 22kg bags of Screedmaster Industrial and ten litres of water. To solve the challenge of moving heavy buckets throughout the multi-storey building, TAL provided two-wheel trolleys for easier mixing, transportation and pouring of the product at the points of application. It is estimated that the trolleys reduced the screed application time by approximately 40%.
