High performance buildings

Knauf Insulation’s products provide thermal, fire safety and acoustic performance, and reduce carbon emissions. The company believes that there is no path to net zero without improving energy efficiency in poorly insulated homes. High-performance buildings that deliver in the real world are needed.

Sustainability agenda

Knauf Insulation invests heavily in resources, skills, tools and technology, so that progress and sustainability remain top priorities. It pushes the sustainability agenda by providing expertise to improve regulations governing building energy efficiency and real performance.

Every stage of their value chain and process is considered, from conserving natural resources to reducing the impact of its own processes, including packaging and distribution.

Product sustainability

  • Manufactured in the United Kingdom (UK), Knauf Insulation’s glass mineral wool products have some of the lowest embodied carbon on the market.
  • Its unique ECOSE® Technology binder contains no added formaldehyde or phenol, and it is less energy-intensive to produce than typical binders.
  • A BES 6001 certification with a “very good” rating confirms that products are made from responsibly sourced constituent materials.
  • The first manufacturer in Europe to achieve a “Declare red list free” label for rock and glass mineral wool products. The label includes where a product is made, its life expectancy and end-of-life options, its ingredients, volatile organic compound (VOC) levels and whether it contains chemicals featured on the red list.

Organisational sustainability

In 2020, Knauf Insulation introduced its “For a Better World” sustainability strategy, which has four pillars:

  • Put people first.
  • Achieve zero carbon.
  • Deliver a circular economy.
  • Create better buildings.

Its short-term sustainability goals feed into the new Knauf Group’s ambitious longer-term strategy, which is to achieve net zero by 2045, with a 50% reduction in scope 1 and 2 emissions, and a 30% reduction in scope 3 emissions by 2032.

Challenges

The world needs more insulation to reduce energy usage. Therefore Knauf Insulation needs to expand its capacity, while staying committed to reducing its total carbon emissions in absolute terms.

Infrastructure challenges include the national grid, which is lagging in terms of what is needed for electrification. Opportunities to deploy other renewable power solutions like hydrogen are similarly dependent on the national inventory.

Partnership benefits

Knauf Insulation is the only insulation manufacturer in the UK to provide Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) to the latest EN15804+A2 standard, for its entire price list product range. The company shares information about its products, regulations, and labels in a transparent way, to educate and empower merchants when advising their customers.

Knauf Insulation is committed to sustainability. Its purpose is two-fold: High-performance, low-carbon products for low-carbon built environments.
