Dube Trade Port is a Special Economic Zone strategically located 30km north of Durban. The area acts as a global manufacturing and air logistics platform and is charged with the responsibility of developing the province’s biggest infrastructure project.
Technical Finishes recently worked with an energy-focused fuel cell products manufacturing company to complete a 2600sqm industrial flooring project to provide chemical protection, stain protection and a long-term solution that could withstand heavy-duty traffic in the factory. A high-build, solvent-free epoxy resin system called Solidkote Robust was used.
One of the challenges was that the installation had to be completed by an accredited installer within a short amount of time. What made this project unique was the preparation method that was implemented – and which was required – because the concrete substrate was fibre reinforced. A specialised preparation method called HCA (hot compressed air) was carried out. During this process, the concrete was treated with a flame to remove any protruding fibres and finished off with a mechanical diamond grinding process to achieve maximum adhesion for the finished epoxy system.
The floor was also primed with a moisture tolerant primer called Solidkote STP. The result was a glossy, easy-to-clean high build resin system, providing the factory with a hardwearing and aesthetically pleasing finish.
