COBA Africa, a leading supplier in the flooring industry, offers guidance in selecting the right entrance matting system (EMS).
Making the right choice can be challenging with the various options available. With these guidelines, ensuring internal flooring that stays free from moisture and debris is easy.
In the zone
A simple zoning system is the easiest way to choose the right EMS. Dividing the entrance into three zones optimises the system’s performance.
-
Zone 1: Exterior entrance matting
-
- Must handle various climates throughout the year and accommodate typical footwear.
-
- Should effectively scrape dirt from footwear.
-
- An open-construction EMS allows dirt and debris to fall to the base of the mat, keeping the surface hazard-free.

Dividing an entrance into three zones optimises the matting systems’ performance.
-
Zone 2: Primary interior entrance matting
-
- The interim zone between zones one and three.
-
- Needs to be tough and durable, removing the remainder of moisture and dirt.
-
Zone 3: Secondary interior entrance matting
-
- By zone three, most of the dirt should be removed from people’s footwear.
-
- This is the final drying and scraping stage.
-
- If the budget is limited, prioritise the primary interior EMS.

Plan.a™ Entrance Matting is designed for heavy-duty use and high footfall.
EMS length
People do not usually wipe their feet thoroughly when entering a mall or shopping centre. The length of the EMS therefore impacts its effectiveness. A minimum of six footsteps is recommended to clear debris completely before visitors reach the internal flooring.
COBA Plan.a
Plan.a™ Entrance Matting is a robust, high-quality aluminium system, designed for heavy-duty use and high footfall. Features include:
- Flexible yet durable PVC linking joints for ease of handling and fitting.
- Custom-made to specification, offering different surface options, including vibrant coloured needle punch or needlefelt polypropylene carpet inserts.
- Manufactured in the United Kingdom (UK), fire-tested to BS EN 13501-1 and slip-tested to BS 7976-2, ensuring it meets high safety standards.
By following these guidelines, selecting an entrance matting system that effectively keeps internal flooring clean and safe is ensured.
An effective EMS requires consideration of the three entrance zones, mat length and then product selection.
