Making the right choice can be challenging with the various options available. With these guidelines, ensuring internal flooring that stays free from moisture and debris is easy. 

In the zone 

A simple zoning system is the easiest way to choose the right EMS. Dividing the entrance into three zones optimises the system’s performance.  

• Zone 1: Exterior entrance matting 

• • Must handle various climates throughout the year and accommodate typical footwear.  

• • Should effectively scrape dirt from footwear.  

• • An open-construction EMS allows dirt and debris to fall to the base of the mat, keeping the surface hazard-free.

• Zone 2: Primary interior entrance matting 

• • The interim zone between zones one and three. 

• • Needs to be tough and durable, removing the remainder of moisture and dirt.  

• Zone 3: Secondary interior entrance matting 

• • By zone three, most of the dirt should be removed from people’s footwear.  

• • This is the final drying and scraping stage.  

• • If the budget is limited, prioritise the primary interior EMS.

EMS length 

People do not usually wipe their feet thoroughly when entering a mall or shopping centre. The length of the EMS therefore impacts its effectiveness. A minimum of six footsteps is recommended to clear debris completely before visitors reach the internal flooring.
