Grinding and polishing the floors at THE MARC

THE MARC is the latest multi-use development to open in the Sandton CBD. The official launch was in September 2018 and it consists of two office towers which rise along the Maude Street and Rivonia Road boundaries, and a centre at the base of towers comprising restaurants, fashion outlets, general retail, a gym and medical suites.

THE MARC was developed by Eris Property Group and as a founding member of the Green Building Council of South Africa, Boogertman + Partners ensured that THE MARC was designed and constructed to be environmentally sustainable. To ensure the floors of the new development match world-class interiors, 3000m² of Mondeco Floor from Flowcrete was supplied for the floors in the complex. Roy Stuchbury, a member of Safri Spec, used Diamond Products’ tooling to ensure the epoxy terrazzo system met the requirements of the client.

“The epoxy terrazzo system was installed at 10mm. We then used Diamond Products’ tooling to grind it to 2mm. After this, we used an aggressive grind to expose the aggregate on the epoxy before using a diamond tool to smooth it. The diamond tooling eliminates cracks and scratches on the surface. The final step was to polish it to achieve a beautiful floor that will last for many years to come,” says Roy.

Roy adds that many South African shopping centres are opting for terrazzo flooring. “This type of floor lasts a very long time and is low maintenance. Virtually all American airports have this type of flooring, so it is common overseas. South African developers are now following suit by installing terrazzo floors in local projects. I can highly recommend working with Diamond Products when installing this type of floor as they offer great after sales service and support,” says Roy.

Diamond Products is a specialist in the manufacture, assembly, sales and support of diamond tools and equipment for the construction, glass, quarrying and flooring industries. Based in Jet Park, the company is unique in its ability to assemble and support its product range and is the only diamond tool company in South Africa with laser welding facilities for the manufacture of diamond blades and core drills.
