Grinders rescue concrete floor

Finishing the indoor sport arena at the Cliffview Primary School in Fairlands, Johannesburg was not as straightforward as originally expected, with the arena’s floor containing numerous surface high-spots.

Leaders in diamond tooling and machinery for the flooring industry, the Diamond Products Group came to the school’s aid to ready the more than 3 000m² of flooring to be overlaid with a self-levelling screed.

Inspection of the concrete slab determined that the floor required surface grinding along all the joints where high spots had formed to prevent the self-leveller from flowing away from the joints towards lower areas, known as valleys. If not done, the self-levelling screed would be vulnerable over the joints, varying the thickness across the installation.

The Blastrac BMG555WD planetary floor grinder and BDC-1330LPP dust collector machines, combined with specialised diamond grinding pads, mechanically levelled the floor, creating an optimum profile to ensure the surface bond between the concrete & screed.

Brian Clark, Director at Diamond Products Group, notes, “The advantage of using these machines is two-fold. The planetary head system ensures a near flat surface when grinding and secondly, it allows for speed & precision.” As it is a medium to large class floor grinder, it is the perfect choice for large floors.

The result was a resounding success and pupils will spend many happy years enjoying the benefits this arena has to offer.
