Standard Bank’s iconic new headquarters in Rosebank has achieved five-star status from the Green Building Council of South Africa (GBCSA). To achieve this, product specification was of the highest order. All paints, adhesives and sealants boast a low volatile organic compound (VOC) rating.
Rory Roriston, head of Standard Bank Real Estate Asset Management, says attaining this star status cost about 3% more than the same building without sustainable features. Karin Ireton, group sustainability manager at Standard Bank, says: “We continuously consider our own role within the bigger energy picture by managing our own energy footprint, but also that of our customers.”
Built at a cost of R2,7-billion by main contractor Wilson Bayly Holmes Ovcon, sub-contractors used a wide range of Den Braven products to achieve the green star rating on this project and meet the stringent quality requirements.
Improvair Environmental Solutions used Den Braven’s Silicone NO product in the manufacturing of the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning equipment installed at Standard Bank’s head office.
Ceilings, partitions and acoustic cladding
Dracon was responsible for the installation of all the ceilings, partitions and acoustic cladding used in the building. The company used a combination of Acryl-W and PU Foam that contains a safety propellant to ensure excellent gap filling. Apart from being strong due to its dense cellular structure Den Braven PU Foam also has excellent insulation and sound absorbing properties.
Marble Classic supplied the cladding for Standard Bank’s building and used Den Braven’s Hybriflex LM, a single-component low modulus sealant and adhesive that is free from isocyanates, silicones and solvents. Hybriflex LM provides excellent adhesion to most substrates and is non-staining.
Marble and granite tiling
Rudolph & Van Vuuren (RVV) was responsible for the tiling, where marble and granite tiles were installed using, Acryl-W and Hybriflex LM. These sealants not only provided good adhesion but rounded of the aesthetic aspects as well.
Ultimo Seal was responsible for fire sealing at Standard Bank’s building, where its systems were designed to stop fires on electrical cables. It used the Silicone NO product and Pyrocryl – which is an intumescent acrylic, single-component, emulsion based-sealant for fire-retarding applications.
Den Braven has again proven that their range of products is an excellent fit for the most prestigious projects. For more information about their wide variety of products for your build, contact them today.
