Mediocrity is the enemy of excellence – and it’s expensive too
Kim Ikel, Founder of The KimCoach Partnership, challenges readers to consider how much mediocrity is costing them. “Or for that matter, in the current economic landscape, how much is ‘good’ costing you?” she questions. “Consider the 75% rule.”
Kim explains that at most South African universities, a first-class pass is given for 75% and above, and a second (division one) for 70 – 74%. “At school one can pass just about any subject with merit given a score of around 75% – that’s usually a good, solid grade,” she continues. “But think how this same rule applies to work performance if one is correct only three times out of four. It results in working at a mediocre to ‘good’ level. This implies that as an employee, manager and/or company one is content with merely ‘good’.”
Individuals are encouraged to ask themselves, “How much does ‘mediocre’ or ‘good’ really cost?”
Mediocre or good is the middle of the pack. “Aiming for that 75% implies aiming for mediocrity – and one would probably get worse,” Kim highlights.
