Aluglass Bautech explains how to create soundproof space in offices, conference centres and other corporate buildings – easily and affordably.
Open-plan offices have evolved from rows of desks and cubicles to truly free-flowing environments supposed to energise and spur creativity. However, open offices generate a lot of noise – a big productivity killer. Here are four tips from Aluglass Bautech to take care of the workplace cacophony and create a successful workplace:
Tip 1: Identify noise sources
Observe what creates noise and how sound travels across the open-plan office, then start to isolate the worst offenders. Also be realistic about the type of environment (office vs call centre) and how much you can reduce the noise levels.
Install: Acoustic or soundproof partitions
The solution may be as simple as installing Aluglass Bautech’s Moveo motorised acoustic partition system to close off sections of a room with ease, flexibility and speed. Another option is Variflex mobile acoustic partitions, which operate with an overhead track, allowing uninterrupted floor finishes.
Tip 2: Fight background noise
Background noise is one of the biggest annoyances but once isolated, it is easier to remedy. Chatter on phones, air-conditioners whirring away, outside traffic and chairs scraping are common noise generators.
Install: Acoustic ceiling and wall panels
Fabricmates screen fabric absorption panels or slotted wooden veneer panels can greatly reduce the din of chatter, and can be installed on both walls and ceilings. Moving electronic office equipment to the far side of the office can also make a big difference, while curtains can help diminish outside noise and indoor plants are effective in scattering sound.
Tip 3: Tackle the “irrelevant speech effect”
Perhaps the biggest complaint is about sound privacy, specifically hearing other conversations. This is a challenge because the very point of an open office is to create collaboration, but numerous studies have shown it has a detrimental effect on productivity.
Install: Acoustic partitions
Consider new layouts for the office with desks pointing away from each other or reduce the number of phones. Also, Aluglass Bautech’s Variflex mobile acoustic partition system allows acoustic rooms to be set up. When the open plan area is needed, the individual elements can be neatly parked away either to the side or into a niche by an overhead track system.
Tip 4: Create sound zones
A popular trend, inspired by airport business lounges, is to have a quiet space. This can be a segregated area where conversation and phone calls are not allowed and where employees can go and do work that requires deep concentration or to just relax for a little.
Install: re-mountable glass partitions
GF Serene from Aluglass Bautech is an ideal acoustic re-mountable partition system with which to create quiet spaces within open-plan applications. With modular glass elements and flexible frame components, it is quick and easy to install, remove and reinstall.
