Belgotex Floorcoverings scooped the award for Contributions to Skills Development at the 2013 Flooring Awards. Their training division, called the Belgotex Flooring Academy, covers both basic as well as advanced installation training on Carpeting, Luxury Vinyl Tiles, Homogeneous and Hetrogeneous Vinyl and Artificial Grass.
Belgotex also present technical sales training (technical information sales persons need to be familiar with) and measuring & estimating training across various product categories that are offered by the company. Today, the programmes and courses are taught across South Africa as well as in Zimbabwe, Zambia, Namibia, Mauritius, Brazil and India.
History of the academy
When the academy was launched in 1999, only basic carpet installation training was given to students. In 2003, the academy evolved to include an advanced carpet installation programme focused on patterned tufted products, needlepunch carpeting as well as tile and stair installation training. After this expansion and evolution, the programme was re-branded as the Carpet Pro Academy.
In 2007 Belgotex introduced a technical sales programme to the academy and, in 2008, added a laminate technical sales and installation programme as well as a measuring and estimating training programme. Due to the diversity of Belgotex’s product ranges and programmes, the company decided to register this training division as the Belgotex Academy. A homogeneous/heterogeneous vinyl technical sales and installation programme was introduced during 2012 and last year a luxury vinyl tile training programme was added.
Helping young students
In 2008 the Belgotex Academy introduced an informal carpet installation programme at the Van Kerval School in George. This programme is designed for students who have learning difficulties. In 2011 Weskus School was added to programme and, in 2013 De Grendel School in Cape Town and from 2014 Randeor School in Alberton.
In 2011 Belgotex Academy partnered with Sparrows FET College in Johannesburg. Together they aligned their learning material to the National Qualification for installation of floorcoverings at NQF 1 level and this led to Sparrow FET College formally acquiring programme approval to offer this qualification. In March 2013 Belgotex Academy registered and sponsored 30 students with the Construction SETA into the NQF 1 programme. Sparrow FET College is now the lead training provider for this programme. The formal SETA NQF 1 qualification is a full-year programme, while the informal courses (such as carpet installation, technical sales, measuring and estimating and LVT installations) run 6 – 10 times per year. Over 3 000 people have received informal training at the Belgotex Academy since its inception in 1999.
The academy is committed to upgrading and improving the flooring industry by enhancing the professionalism and earning potential of fitters and sales staff. Belgotex believes that education is the best way to serve the end users of flooring products and assure the long-term growth of the floorcovering industry as a whole.
