EcoStandard, a non-profit certification organisation, has launched the first South African certified eco-label for products in the building and construction industry.
EcoStandard, a non-profit certification organisation, launched the first South African certified ecolabel for products in the building and construction industry, at the EcoExhibit premises in Cape Town on 22 August 2013.
Manfred Braune from the Green Building Council of South Africa gave a short presentation expressing their support. This was followed by the first EcoProduct official certification hand-over to Xanita, whose X-Board scored a four-star rating.
EcoStandard aims to set environmental standards for product excellence, and is the trusted industry certification body when rating a product, manufacturer and/or service provider within the South African building sector.
EcoStandard intends to establish a portfolio of certified and rated products which have received the EcoProduct label. By providing both the trade and consumer market with clear and useful information through this portfolio, EcoStandard aims to assist in eliminating dishonest and fraudulent marketing claims.
Currently there are no locally originated assessment tools available, hence the founding of EcoStandard. Registered as a non-profit organisation, it has designed and launched the very first South African criteria and assessment tool, which is third-party audited and verified to rate and certify the legitimacy of green claims. The EcoProduct certification and ratings procedure assesses products using a full lifecycle approach from sourcing raw materials to final disposal/recycling.
It was originally conceptualised and driven by Rayne Neave, founder of EcoExhibit, a permanent exhibition space providing developers and builders with an opportunity to view eco-friendly products and services in one convenient setting. It has since been joined by Jeffares & Green, a diverse environmental consulting and engineering firm.
Their combined vision is to create a culture of environmental excellence in South Africa’s building industry products by providing a trusted certification body.
The building industry has increasingly been moving towards sustainable development accompanied by market demand for eco-products, materials and services.
However, the ability to distinguish between a legitimate eco-product and one that is not remains a grey area, allowing for green-washing to discredit the genuine supplier. This is of huge concern in the professional building sector.
EcoStandard is confident that in setting high environmental standards, represented through a trusted brand mark, namely EcoStandard, it will help to limit green-washing whilst increasing the demand for, and confidence in, certified products and practices.
The objective is to engage with the government, corporations, professionals, contractors and customers to encourage all sectors to participate in the movement towards environmentally-responsible choices that will ultimately benefit people and the planet.
