Unique way to deliver concrete orders to construction sites with limited access.

Established in 1995, Pronto Readymix Concrete started modest operations from the Transwerk dump in Silverton. Today Pronto is the oldest readymix brand name in Gauteng, with nine readymix plants servicing the majority of the greater region.

The batching plants are situated in Alrode South, Benoni, City Deep, Kya-Sands, Midrand, Pretoria West, Roodepoort and Silverton, with the latest readymix outlet commissioned in late 2013 to service Steyn City and surrounding developments in the Fourways/Diepsloot areas. These plants utilise a fleet of some 100 mixer and tipper trucks, as well as truck-mounted conveyor belts (TCBs) and tankers.

Concrete orders, pumps and TCBs are co-ordinated from each region to ensure efficient and timeous deliveries. The TCB is designed to cast suspended concrete floor slabs, retaining walls, raft foundations and surface beds requiring between 0 – 60 m3 of readymix concrete. The TCB comes into its own where access is limited.

In 2008 Capitalworks’ private equity team, who specialises in partnering with entrepreneurs in mid-market businesses, acquired shares in Pronto Readymix. This involved a name change to Pronto Building Materials (Pty) Limited, of which Pronto Readymix and Ulula Ash are divisions.

Ulula Ash supplies quality fly-ash to South African construction, tile adhesive and cement manufacturers and blenders, mining and pre-cast industries. Fly-ash is extracted from the Kriel power station. Recently the facility at Kriel was upgraded, increasing the supply capacity to 40 000 tons per month. Ulula Ash has the SABS mark for classified and unclassified fly-ash and can provide technical support to optimise utilisation of both products.

One of the more interesting contracts using Ulula Ash was the Ingula Pumped Storage Project, which was commissioned by Eskom to increase South Africa’s electricity capacity. The dam straddles two provinces, namely KwaZulu-Natal and the Free State. The Ulula Ash product was compatible and performed as expected with a wide range of additives and extenders. It also worked well with the doleritic crushed aggregates used on site, as well as contributing to increased durability of the concrete.

Pronto Building Materials is the only company in South Africa that uniquely delivers dry building and plaster mortars to construction sites using truck-mounted conveyors to replenish portable silos. Dry mortars and plasters are available in 34, 22 and 16 ton silos. By simply just adding water to the dry products, a consistent, economical and cost-effective render is available on tap.

Silo discharge points are placed at a convenient height so that a builder’s wheelbarrow can be placed under the discharge butterfly valve or a continuous mixer can be connected at an additional charge. A continuous mixer, available for 380V power supply, can deliver two wheelbarrow loads of ready-mixed, ready-to-use wet mortar in 60 seconds.

The management and staff have extensive experience in the cement, fly-ash, transport and readymix concrete industries, and are geared to meet all customer requirements.
