The world is in the midst of transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable energy, driven by climate change.
In South Africa, the Just Energy Transition (JET) is focussed on the transition of the local energy sector. Around the world, energy-efficient properties have higher valuations and yield better rentals. It is only a matter of time before this becomes the case in South Africa.
Technopol SA, a specialist in energy-saving materials, shares insights into how an Exterior Insulation Finishing System (EIFS) can help achieve energy savings in buildings.
Climate challenge
The demand for energy-efficient and sustainable development has increased significantly in recent years, due to social pressure and legislation. Extreme temperatures are also becoming more frequent, hotter in some areas and colder in others, leading to a higher energy demand.
In response, policymakers are introducing new regulations to promulgate energy efficiency. Locally, these are standards SANS10400XA:2021 and SANS1544:2014.
Why EIFS
The ultimate basis for EIFS is to save on energy costs from either cooling or heating buildings. It is applied to the exterior surfaces of a building as an ideal energy-efficient thermal wrapping or facade insulation.
It can be applied to both new and existing buildings, including renovating older buildings to be more energy-efficient structures. Importantly, the upfront EIFS costs are typically recouped in five to six years.
Product systems
- The Terraco EIFS Alpha system uses Technopol’s EPS (LiteCel™) as the insulation material. For projects of higher fire classifications, the Alpha system has passed the International Standard BS 8414-2 facade fire test.
- Technopol also offers the Perma system, using stonewool as the insulation material. It can then be finished off with Terraco textured coatings or one of the Technopol LiteClad metallic finishes.
EIFS is a reliable insulation solution to lowering energy costs and achieving JET goals.
