Dynamic interior for mining head office

dhk thinkspace recently completed the office design for Exxaro, a mining company in Centurion. This will be the new headquarters of this mining giant and forms part of the second phase of Growthpoint’s Lakeside development, which has garnered attention locally and abroad for its undeniable presence and game-changing interior design and planning.

The Exxaro office can accommodate 1000 staff members in its five storey structure and has complex work environment considerations. Together with the impressive overall development of Lakeside, the inner workings of the new headquarters aim to set a trend in South Africa that will define future design planning for most corporate developments on the continent.

A shift to a modern workspace environment
Adele van Zyl, director at dhk thinkspace, the appointed interior architecture firm, says their approach to the project was multi-faceted, but the underlying goal was to shift Exxaro’s work environment to an innovation-inspiring, collaborative hub. She says the design and structure of the public spaces within the building, which are a central feature for visitors and staff, were a key focus area for their design planning team.

“The office moves away from traditional ideas of workspace and favours an agile, flexible environment that allows staff to work, interact and collaborate in a way that best suits their needs. Exxaro’s sectors of focus namely water, energy, agriculture and coal were the foundation for the underlying creative concept of the project and we used their surroundings, as well as adopted their ideologies to bring the identity of the mining giant to life,” she says.

Interior designed to meet green star certification
The new Exxaro building has an undeniable presence and is energy-efficient, with the building itself achieving a 5-star Green Star SA Design certification from the Green Building Council of South Africa. The majority of materials, furniture and fittings were sourced locally and the Green Star verification of the building was significant in the design of the interior as all materials used had to adhere to the strict requirements of the certification.

The Exxaro headquarters is a shining example of what can be achieved through modern, well planned exterior and interior architecture and has set the precedent for office build and design in South Africa. A focus on fostering and nurturing a collaborative culture within the organisation through space planning and activity-based working will become the standard approach for future corporate office builds on the continent.
