Clairwood Hospital was opened in May 1956 in Mobeni, a southern suburb of Durban. It was originally an army barracks and later converted into a hospital. The specialised rehabilitation and convalescent hospital recently underwent a revamp to add 60 bedrooms and 50 bathrooms to the facility in preparation for the COVID-19 pandemic. The building was stripped of everything – including windows and doors – before being refurbished in record time, which was a great achievement.
Getting a COVID-19 hospital ready in time
The architectural professional on the project was CCA assisted by Ken Lever, with CV Projects as the main contractor and Bombelela Building Projects and Alpha Waterworx as sub-contractors. The project ran 24 hours a day, with two sets of teams working day and night shifts.
The hospital revamp began mid-March and was completed by the end of June 2020. While South Africa was going into lockdown in March, the professional team was gearing up to make sure the project was completed before the virus peaked in South Africa. Victor van den Berg, the Italtile Commercial agent in KwaZulu-Natal, was requested to assist with this urgent project for the Department of Health. The professional team worked 16 hour days and Victor was in touch with them all the time to ensure there were no delays at all. Armed with the required permits, Victor made almost daily visits to Italtile Umhlanga during level five lockdown to coordinate and manage the logistics of getting the required products to site on time.
“Driving to work felt like a movie. There was nobody to be seen on my way from home to the Italtile showroom. It was very surreal,” says Victor.
The products in the ItalCare Range that were used include ISO certified grab rails and shower seats; Laufen Sanitary Ware; Tivoli Taps; locally produced tiles from Ceramic Industries; and Franke Sinks.
