Two types of ASSA ABLOY door closers received certification from the German Institute for Construction and Environment (IBU).

ASSA ABLOY DC700 and DC500 door closers have attained an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) certificate from the German Institute for Construction and Environment (IBU), which confirms the products’ environmental properties.

An EPD is a standardised way of quantifying the environmental impact of a product or system in lifecycle assessment and therefore serves as proof of environmental claims in the public procurement arena.

Since it contains qualitative statements about the environmental performance of building products, it is highly relevant for planners, architects, building companies, real estate companies, facility managers and companies who are involved in manufacturing and serving the supply chain from raw materials.

“We are extremely proud to receive this certificate on our DC700 and DC500 door closers,” says ASSA ABLOY South Africa’s vice-president for commercial sales, Quintin Boukan.

“The fact that EPDs are based on ISO standards means they are internationally aligned, so we are able to bring the latest state-of-the-art technology to the local market to meet the demands of our customers. Ultimately we pass all the benefits related to using world-class products on to our valued customers.”

The IBU was created by manufacturers who decided to support the demand for greater sustainability in the construction sector and is currently the only organisation in Germany that issues certificates based on international standards.

EPDs form the basis for the data for building assessment on an ecological level, which is laid down in the new European Standard project “Sustainability of buildings”, and offer the relevant basic data on the environmental properties of a product for sales and marketing purposes.

In addition to company and product information, the declaration also includes details on:
•    Resource consumption and environmental emissions throughout the entire manufacturing process.
•    To what extent a product contributes to the greenhouse effect, acidification, eutrophication, destruction of the ozone layer and smog formation.
•    The technical properties required for assessing the performance of building products such as durability, heat and sound insulation or the influence on the quality of the indoor air.

“Our next objective,” asserts Boukan, “is to attain EPDs for the ASSA ABLOY concealed door closers DC860 and DC840, as well as for our Rack & Pinion DC300 and DC200 door closers.”
