Over 51 0000 visitors descended on Gallagher Convention Centre from 1 to 11 August for the 26th annual Decorex Joburg. Hinged on this year’s theme, “Designing for Africa – feels like home”, Joburg’s leading designers and suppliers featured on-trend interior solutions for the residential, retail and hospitality spaces through dynamic exhibitions and installations.
Inspired local artists
During the Decorex Designer Spotlight, designer Donald Nxumalo created an iconic space which depicted exactly why Africa is announcing its place in global design. Another shining local talent, Kadi Matsaung, gave visitors a taste of her “simple chic” design style in this year’s Emerging Designer feature. Other iconic local designers such as Metaphor Design and The Collective, among others, interpreted this year’s African-inspired theme in Designer Pavilion.
The Craft Collective, a popular yearly installation sponsored by the Department of Small Business Development, saw 60 craft producers from all nine provinces showcase their ceramics, furniture, bags, jewellery and fashion accessories.
World design icon, Stephen Falcke, formed part of a speakers’ panel for the Instudio Trend Theatre. Industry experts in design and finance shared interesting insights and innovative solutions in a CPD-accredited forum that included world design icon, Stephen Falcke, founding member and managing director of Ditau Interiors, Nthabi Taukobong, head of Absa Home Loans, Nondumiso Ncapai, trend forecaster Dave Nemeth and Plascon colour expert, Claire Bond, among others.
Best stand and other awards
At this year’s Exhibitor Stands’ Awards, Max Fine, Theo Bothma Architects & Design and Luxury Living won the Best Overall Stand Award for their expressive display of elegant modern design with Xperience Luxury. Task Interior Styling was named both Best Décor Stand and Best Newcomer.
Leading furniture manufacturers curated the dynamic Urban Living Trend House, which gave visitors a room-by-room view of home style. Mobelli Furniture + Living continued to inspire alongside landscaping experts in the outdoor Garden of the Future Landscaping Feature. Cognisance in exterior design offers a way to extend the home through sustainable gardening, exquisite furniture and innovative landscaping solutions.
The Playroom Children’s Decor Project saw suppliers put together welcoming room settings, complete with neutral tones and age-transcending furniture. Where muted might work well in a nursery, functional lighting solutions are the perfect choice for kitchen settings – as shown in this year’s Lighting Project, which showcased the ultimate in creative and modern lighting solutions to alter the mood of any space.
Novice artists got the chance to express themselves while enjoying a glass of wine with friends at this year’s Paint Nite with Yaymaker. The latest trendy feature, Jacobs Gourmet Cooking Theatre, saw kitchen and comedy collide. With a beautifully designed backdrop, the Jacobs Coffee Magicians – MasterChef judge, Pete Goffe-Wood, and Celebrity MasterChef winner and local comedian, Chris Forrest – kept audiences in stitches with their culinary antics.
There was also a wine and bubbly bar, a gin garden and gourmet menus at the Dine & Design Restaurant + Bar. For a two-day special on Friday and Saturday, visitors to this year’s Decorex Joburg were treated to the expansive organic, vintage and artisanal offerings of the 2-Day Pop-up Market in collaboration with Linden Market.
