One of the original homes in Buccleuch, a suburb of Sandton in Gauteng, has been updated with contemporary materials that respect the historic aesthetic of the home.
The homeowners have made use of fluted wall panels from Amari Trading to update the look of the home. Made of engineered wood fibres and polyethylene, the product gives the look of wood with the added benefits of mould, water and termite resistance.
Historic location
The suburb of Buccleuch stands on one of the old Witwatersrand farms called Waterval, owned by John Alexander Gibson. Upon his death in 1928, it was divided amongst seven heirs and sold.
Gibson’s son, Frederick, surveyed his portion as a township divided into 170 stands of 3 to 5 acres. The suburb itself was named after Frederick’s family friend, the Duke of Buccleuch, and the street names after family and friends.

By extending the installation of the wall panels across the length of the wall, a seamless modern look is achieved.
Blending old and new
Nestled on Margaret Street, the home is a blend of old and new. In the entrance way, fluted wall panels cover the old, discoloured tiled wall with a wood-look design that sits comfortably alongside the wood staircase.
Upstairs, in the bedrooms, the built-in cupboards were fronted with plain wood doors, painted white. These have been covered with fluted wall panels with a delicate metallic finish (Metallic 01).
Extending the installation across the full length of the wall, the application brings a modern feel to the private space and creates a sophisticated, seamless look in the room.
Fluted wall panels integrate contemporary and classic styling in a historic home in Buccleuch.
