Kevin Bates Flooring & Carpeting / Albert Carpets (KBAC) won a highly commended award in the Contribution to Skills Development category at the 2013 Flooring Awards.
Over 30 learners have graduated from their floorcovering installation training programme and attained the National Certificate in Construction: Installation of Floor Coverings at Tjeka Training Matters, a private FET college in Krugersdorp.
The programme is a recognised SAQA (South African Qualifications Authority) qualification. “The programme will run according to demand, but we hope an increasing number of people will see the value of having a certificate in this field so that we can train more people on how to install floorcoverings correctly,” commented Neil Duncan of KBAC.
The company has also provided bursaries to the value of R10 000 each year for the past 15 years. These bursaries are given to Quantity Surveying and Interior Design students at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. The beneficiaries are selected by the University.
“The construction industry needs to help young people develop skills that are so badly needed in our country. By ensuring that KBAC has installers who are properly qualified, we are able to provide high-quality flooring installations and providing bursaries to students enables KBAC to contribute and give back to the industry,” concludes Duncan.
