Cement & Concrete SA (CCSA) believes that concrete proficiency is urgently needed in South Africa. Therefore, the need for top-quality skills in concrete technology and practices is essential.

In his foreword to the School of Concrete Technology’s (SCT’s) training programme for 2023, John Roxburgh, senior lecturer, says the SCT realises how critical it is to produce high-quality concrete that meets all strength and durability requirements. A common theme of the SCT courses for this year centres on sustainability, based on the best practices to ensure that the finished concrete product utilises resources as efficiently as possible.

Knowledge-based curricula

“Our variety of courses cater for the different needs required by a broad spectrum of students,” Roxburgh states. These are not hands-on courses, but rather technical programmes well suited for professionals within the built environment. Selected courses offer continuing professional development (CPD) points, as their knowledge-based curricula aim to grow the industry’s understanding about concrete and its use.

Range of courses

The SCT curriculum covers ten standard courses ranging from an “Introduction to concrete” to more specialised training on various topics, including “Concrete for industrial floors” and “Concrete road design and construction”. All the courses are presented in Midrand, with some scheduled for Durban and Cape Town.

Advanced concrete technology

At an advanced level, the United Kingdom (UK) Institute of Concrete Technology’s two highly respected courses, “Concrete technology and construction general principals and practical application”, and the pinnacle of concrete training, “Advanced concrete technology (ACT)”, will continue in 2023. Roxburgh says the ACT modularised self-study programme was successfully launched in 2022 and several delegates have already joined the programme.
