Children’s centre gets colourful makeover with colourful inlays from Perspex.
The Qalakahle Early Childhood Development (ECD) Centre in Mansel Market, Durban, has been brightened up with a variety of coloured Perspex® cast acrylic inlays for the fences and doors.
Having been on the verge of closing in 2010 due to the regulation health and safety standards not being met, the centre was rescued by We are Durban and iTrump, who put together a group to help ensure the centre’s survival. Early childhood development is the only phase of education that is not regulated by the government, while it is one of the most important phases of learning, making the Qalakahle ECD Centre’s work an essential service for children in the area.
The initial sponsorship from Headway Pre-Primary got the renovation project underway and with the help of Ocean Architects, who designed the facility and pulled the whole project together, other companies such as the Afrisun KwaZulu-Natal Community Development Trust and the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) soon joined in with impressive sponsorships.
Once Perspex heard about the efforts to keep the Qalakahle ECD Centre’s doors open, the company decided to also get involved. Perspex’s aim was to help build a colourful space where children are not only able to grow and learn, but to also create a space that they would be excited about going to everyday, hence the sponsorship.
Today the doors of the Qalakahle ECD Centre are open again to continue the kind and caring work to help the children in Mansel Market towards a better and brighter future.
