Build Antique, is nestled on Robin Hill Farm along the Bottelary Road between Stellenbosch and Kuils River. Italian immigrants, Adolfo and Roma Gerbi moved to the farm and started the business in the early 1960s. Their twin sons, Antonio and Saverio, grew up working in the second-hand building material yard, where an understanding and love for repurposed goods became entrenched in their lives from a young age.
After studying, the twins worked together in the family business. Antonio led several commercial property building projects and Saverio continued to buy and sell second-hand building material.
Heritage products
Saverio established Build Antique as a subsidiary of Ansave Investments, with a keen eye for all things that had the potential of being revamped. While on holiday in Denmark in the 1990s, Saverio spotted builders throwing out interior doors onto Copenhagen’s streets – ready for the rubbish dump. He was not going to let the opportunity pass him by and filled a container with the doors and shipped it back to South Africa.
Unique collection
Saverio sadly passed away in 2022, but the collection of vintage items he assembled over the past 40 years is still available on the farm, with the original team now headed by younger sister Giovanna. There is an extensive selection of teak and oregon pine doors, windows, shutters and wooden beams, as well as beautiful cast iron poles and accessories. Many of the doors thrown out of the National Museum of Denmark are also still available.
For those who want to add unique finishing touches to a home or building project, Build Antique has an impressive collection of distinctive pieces from a bygone era.
