The number of beautiful and technologically advanced handmade carpets from around the world is both inspiring and motivating for the flooring industry.

On 18 January, the Carpet Design Awards 2015 were presented to the winners by Innovations@DOMOTEX. Prizes were awarded to the world’s best designer carpets in eight categories by an international jury of carpet and design experts.

These awards honoured outstanding quality and unique designs at the prestigious DOMOTEX Hannover 2015 annual expo. Already in its tenth year, DOMOTEX is considered one of the leading trade fairs for floorcoverings. Prizes were awarded according to specific categories, such as studio artist designs, traditional and modern carpets and rugs, best innovation, etc. The public were also able to select their favorite product at the end of DOMOTEX.

More than 250 designer pieces from 23 countries were submitted for these coveted trophies, with 25 carpets reaching the final round. These carpets were on display throughout DOMOTEX with all eight winning designs impressing the expert jury due to their outstanding characteristics in terms of form, colour and material used. The carpets were judged according to the following criteria: the design and design concept, materials used, texture and quality, finish, as well as sustainability and branding.

“This year the panel (of judges) consisted of people with hugely different skill sets, all of whom work in different countries,” explains Michael Sodeau, head of the Carpet Design Awards jury, who also heads his own design practice in London. “This meant that everyone’s professional experience was quite different, and sharing our opinions was very engaging and informative, and I think has led to an interesting range of results.”

All eight winners received their awards at a prestigious ceremony in the presence of international guests from the retail and design sectors of the international carpet industry. For the first time, the prize-giving ceremony this year was held as part of the Innovations@DOMOTEX showcase.
Innovations@DOMOTEX offers companies the unique opportunity to place the spotlight on their innovations in the presence of a choice international audience of professionals at DOMOTEX. (Be sure to read more on this in the previous issue of FLOORS magazine, as well as in this issue’s applications & installation technology article.)

The format provides an appealing, tangible means of conveying the sector’s innovative spirit. In addition, it featured exhibitors who benefited from considerably more exposure as larger crowds are drawn to their latest product offerings and trailblazing innovations. Being part of Innovations@DOMOTEX also simplifies the process of getting in touch with interested retailers, craftspeople and architects, thus stimulating new business and valuable networking. Those who partake in Innovations@DOMOTEX also benefit from high-impact publicity – not only during, but also before and after, the show.

Well done! to all winners of these awards who embraced the challenge to participate in this competition and showcase their passion in a visual manner, in the form of beautiful and innovative handmade carpets.
