Three Builders Superstores have opened in developing urban areas.

Home improvement retailer, Builders, has introduced the superstore concept to underserved markets around the country by opening three new superstores since November last year.

Builders Superstores are aimed at homes in townships, rural and developing urban areas that would ordinarily benefit from government infrastructural spend, as well as small contractors. Stores are situated in dense residential, township, rural and developing areas, and are conveniently located near commuter nodes.

The first two stores started trading on 29 November 2013 in Tembisa, located east of Johannesburg, and Evaton in the Sedibeng district, while the most recent Builders Superstore opened its doors in Tembisa Commercia on 28 March 2014. It is located on the corner of Modderfontein and Mastif Roads, Tembisa.

The stores measure approximately 1 500m² under roof with a 2 000m² external yard catering mainly for contractors.

Economic impact – creating new jobs
The roll-out of the Builders Superstores has created a total of 83 positions within the stores’ communities.

Product range
The product range is narrowed and focused, but will remain project complete. The Builders Superstores provide customers with basic structure products including cement, timber, bricks, roofing and glass, as well as paint and paint accessories, gas, power tools and other tools, automotive, flooring, décor (curtains and cushions), electrical, security, fencing, gardening tools, paraffin, candles, storage, lighting, kitchen, plumbing, bathroom, windows and doors. It also includes other products that are not offered in a Builders Warehouse or Express store, for example paraffin, candles and pre-paid electricity.

Services include estimating, credit facilities, truss manufacturing and design, key cutting, paint tinting, deliveries, glass cutting, gas filling and exchange, as well as paraffin filling.

Builders encourages continuous engagement and participation with local communities in which its stores operate, and is committed to supporting and promoting initiatives that focus on early childhood development.

The company believes that the secret to successful retailing is to give its customers what they want, and therefore the Builders Superstores are planned to be fun, safe, clean, engaging and respectful shopping environments. The design and layout of the stores will be easy to navigate and will further help to define the stores’ merchandise areas. Directional signage on every aisle will help customers to find what they are looking for and create an inviting shopping experience. Customers can expect competitive pricing, friendly and resourceful staff and ease of accessibility in this format.

The Builders Superstore vision is to roll out 60 stores within the next five years, contributing to the development and growth of the usual underserved market.
