Zinc cladding

The Old Cape Quarter development, set in the heart of Cape Town’s vibrant De Waterkant neighbourhood, seamlessly blends historical charm with modern sophistication.

In a densely packed urban environment, the interplay between architecture and its surroundings can define not only the aesthetic but also the experience of living.

DHK Architects has taken this principle to heart with its innovative use of RHEINZINK zinc cladding on the fifth-floor external facades of a new retail, office and residential project.

By opting for this material, they have successfully softened the building’s exterior – introducing a sleek, modern finish that blends sophistication with durability.

The Old Cape Quarter is located in the historic De Waterkant neighbourhood in Cape Town.

The location

At the core of the development lies the protected Old Cape Quarter Piazza, a significant historical landmark that anchors the development in Cape Town’s rich past. The approach was to weave contemporary elements into the original structure, preserving its heritage while reviving the area with a high-quality contemporary architectural insertion.

The choice of materials results in a harmonious, contemporary design.

Material choice

RHEINZINK’s natural patina and subtle texture bring warmth and character to the architecture, mitigating the hard edges typically associated with high-density environments.

The zinc cladding reflects light in a way that feels organic, offering a calming visual counterpoint to the bustling surroundings.

In this choice, DHK Architects not only showcases an understanding of materials but also a thoughtful consideration of how architecture can enhance both the urban landscape and the quality of life for residents.

The result is a harmonious, contemporary design that respects the vibrancy of its context while offering a serene retreat above the city’s intensity.

The RHEINZINK cladding installation sits well within the colour palette of the surrounding buildings.
