Through research and technological advancement in hybrid (SPUR and MS) technology, Den Braven has produced a range of new high-performance sealants and adhesives.
Hybrid sealant
One of these, Hybriflex-540, is a versatile one-component hybrid sealant with a low modulus for sealing building joints. It is used for expansion and connection joint sealing, as well as for weather and perimeter sealing. Highly elastic, it allows 25% joint movement and high resistance to ageing and weathering.

Hybriflex-540 is also free of isocyanates and silicones, and offers good adhesion, even without primer, to concrete, brickwork, painted wood, glass, glazed substrates, aluminium, steel, stainless steel, plastics like polyester and most uPVC surfaces. Hybriflex-540 is formulated to be bubble free even when used in hot conditions and low in VOC’s.

Fire protection
Another innovation, Fire Protect® (FP) Hybrid Sealant, is a durable one-component sealant that provides up to four hours of fire resistance in both linear and horizontal joints between walls and floors or ceilings. It will assist in the prevention the spreading of fire, smoke or toxic gases when used as part of an integrated fire prevention system.

It absorbs movement up to 25%, resists fungus and vermin, is non-corrosive towards metals and is ultraviolet (UV)-, weather- and water-resistant. Applicable for joints up to 30mm wide, it also prevents unwanted airflows. FP Hybrid Sealant is easy to apply and paintable with most water- and oil-based paints.

Why hybrids?
Polyurethane and silicone sealants or adhesives deliver significant adhesion, good movement capability and durability. However, these high-performance products have some limitations.

Michael Berg, national sales and marketing manager at Den Braven, points out that new technology, silylated urethane-based hybrid adhesives bring with it exceptional performance characteristics beyond those of conventional polyurethane sealants.

“The new breed adhesives have increased chemical resistance as well as high and instant tack properties,” says Berg. “Hybrid polymers have better weathering characteristics than conventional polyurethane sealants. These new-generation hybrid sealants and adhesives also provide better adhesion, abrasion resistance and low temperature extrudability,” he adds.

Sustainability and the harmful effect of VOCs are top of mind in the built environment today and Den Braven’s Hybrid product range has a very low VOC content, allowing for conformation to the South African Green Building Council standards.
