Latest FloorworX Luxury Vinyl Flooring sale and why?

FloorworX’s popular Luxury Vinyl Flooring range, Highlander, is now on a warehouse clearance sale at R160 m², while stocks last. As the fastest growing floor covering over the past five years, luxury vinyl flooring is a hot topic when it comes to flooring décor. To get this flooring at a steal, contact FloorworX call centre today. See end of articles for access to samples, details and discount codes.

Available as high-quality Luxury Vinyl Planks (LVPs) and Luxury Vinyl Tiles (LVTs), this floor covering consists of a photographic print film laminated between a backing and a clear vinyl layer. The process produces extremely realistic designs and offers a selection of sizes and shapes.

In fact, thanks to 3D printing technology, the aesthetics of more expensive flooring types such as wooden, marble or slate flooring are perfectly replicated. What’s more, the floors not only look like wood, they feel like it too! Upon touch, one can feel the grains and textures that define wood floors.

What makes LVPs and LVTs a good choice?
In short, the products:
• are environmentally friendly,
• are safe from harmful substances such as formaldehyde and VOCs (volatile organic compounds),
• are made from virgin materials,
• have excellent acoustic, insulation, castor-wear and furniture-leg resistance properties,
• offer low maintenance requirements, and
• require no special treatments.

They are also a flexible choice for those who enjoy redecorating and redesigning, because unlike other types of flooring, they can easily be lifted and replaced.

Cost-effectiveness: When the budget just doesn’t allow for a natural wood or marble floor, then LVTs offer a more affordable solution that look exactly like those pricier alternatives.

A pristine finish: When installed over a correctly prepared, level subfloor, vinyl is extremely resistant to dents, scratches and stains.

Can be installed anywhere: LVTs are extremely resistant to water and are therefore ideal in areas exposed to a lot of water, which means you can even have the wood look installed in your bathroom.

Comfort: They are soft underfoot and warm during winter.

Design options: LVTs are available in various sizes, including larger sizes, that can be mixed and matched to create a personalised layout.

Installation tips
First evaluate the space before purchasing a specific size. Larger tiles/planks are beautiful but won’t necessarily work well in a very small space. LVPs and LVTs are usually installed as a floating floor, i.e. loose-laid, or glued down.

LVPs and LVTs can be DIY friendly as long as you bear in mind specific criteria such as expansion gaps, maximum sizes, screed levels, etc. However, if you are a novice in the installation of LVPs, it is advisable to opt for paying someone to do the job.

Problems that arise from DIY installations typically include improper floor preparation, moisture in the sub-floor and incorrect expansion gaps. These are the three areas where most floors fail and therefore we recommend the installation be handled by a professional.

What about cleaning and maintenance?
Every reputable product should come with a maintenance brochure. Cleaning involves sweeping the floor maybe once or twice a week using a specially designed Luxury Vinyl Plank Mop with the recommended cleaner sprayed lightly onto the mop before cleaning the floor. One can also use a clean damp cloth.

South African flooring company, FloorworX, recommends this system, because unlike traditional mops, the Luxury Vinyl Plank Mop will not leave any oil residue on the otherwise clean floor. Damp, rather than wet, is always the preferred cleaning method.

No polish, no wax and certainly no household chemicals or abrasives should be used.

The coating is important
FloorworX partnered with American brand, EarthWerks, to bring versatile ranges of LVPs and LVTs that offer both excellent style and hard-wearing durability to the local market.

EarthWerks ranges are all coated with “the toughest coating ever: Tuff Shield”. This coating sets the LVP product apart from its competitors thanks to the stability it gives the planks.

To create a stable and balanced product, the correct mix of ingredients and maintaining a precise thickness for each layer is essential. The thickness of the wear layer, along with the coating, requires a proper match of base layers to solidify the structural integrity of the final product.

Each EarthWerks Luxury Vinyl Plank consists of the following elements:

The foundation is made up of base layers of PVC that create the structural foundation of the plank and differ based on overall thickness. The bottom balancing layer contains a higher content of PVC resin and/or plasticiser to balance the product with the top layer (wear layer) and the multiple base layers. Fibreglass is added between the layers of PVC to promote dimensional stability.

The wear layer is what one sees and touches once the product is installed and it is measured in millimetres. Superior wear layers are critical for performance and for allowing the design layer to come to life. Tuff Shield wear layers offer consistent clarity and thickness, vibrant strength, ultimate wear and moisture resistance.

Tuff Shield is the double coating method (wear layer and UV cured layer) that adds strength to the urethane protection by improving it with the addition of aluminium oxide powder. The aluminium oxide crystals are suspended in the urethane which is applied on top of the LVP wear layer. This method provides additional resistance to normal wear.

Frequently asked questions:

1. How do I choose the right LVP or LVT for my project?
First, make sure that the retailer is a member of the South African Wood and Laminate Flooring Association (SAWLFA).

To gain the best from the floor, choose a 2 or 2.5mm LVP because it is suitable for long-term interior use. Look for a good wear layer ranging from 0.3mm for residential and light commercial to 0.55mm and 0.7mm for medium to heavy commercial use. A thicker wear-layer will ensure that the floor withstands day-to-day wear-and-tear better.

2. Does this flooring type come with guarantees?
Guarantees are available from 10 years up to 30 years, depending on the application, but there is a lot of fine print in-between! Buying cheap LVPs often means that the guarantee isn’t worth the paper it is written on, therefore select a reputable importer or distributor that can back that guarantee.

Remember, a guarantee only covers certain aspects and does not include poor installation, which can void any guarantee given by the manufacturer.

EarthWerks Luxury Vinyls offered by FloorworX carry up to a lifetime domestic and 30-year commercial guarantee depending on the range. If the installation is done incorrectly, the floor is not maintained properly or is abused, it will disqualify the guarantee.

3. Is underfloor heating an option with LVTs and LVPs?
Underfloor heating is an option, but there are specific rules for the installation in terms of temperature i.e. a maximum of 27ºC in the screed. Also, make sure that the flooring product itself is suitable for underfloor heating.

4. How do LVTs and LVTs react to water?
LVP flooring itself is water resistant and will handle excessive moisture quite well. If flooding occurs in the area installed, the flooring can be removed and once the sub-floor has dried sufficiently, it is possible to be re-installed. The type of adhesive used and the effect of the water on the adhesive must however be assessed per situation.
