What considerations are there when choosing paint, specific to South African weather conditions? 

South Africa’s diverse weather conditions, ranging from arid deserts to humid coastal regions, pose unique challenges for selecting the right paint.  

Ensuring durability and aesthetic appeal requires careful consideration of factors such as temperature fluctuations, humidity, ultraviolet (UV) radiation and seasonal rainfall.  

Herman Rabe, technical training manager at Prominent Paints, has two decades of experience at the leading architectural brands in South Africa. He shares the key considerations to guide paint choices for local weather conditions. 

UV radiation and colour fading

South Africa experiences high levels of UV radiation, especially in regions such as the Highveld and the Northern Cape, which can cause paint colours to fade prematurely.  

To combat this, opt for UV-resistant paints designed to withstand prolonged sun exposure. Light-reflective colours and formulations with added UV inhibitors can significantly extend the life of exterior paint. 

Temperature fluctuations

The country experiences temperature extremes, from the scorching summers of the Karoo to the chilly winters of the Drakensberg. This necessitates paints that can endure thermal expansion and contraction without cracking or peeling.  

Acrylic paints are particularly suitable due to their flexibility and resilience to temperature changes. For areas experiencing extreme cold, latex-based paints provide good elasticity and adhesion. 

Humidity and moisture resistance

Coastal regions such as Durban and Cape Town are characterised by high humidity levels and salty air, which can accelerate paint degradation and promote mould growth.  

For these areas, choose paints with anti-mildew properties and high resistance to moisture. Elastomeric paints are ideal for coastal climates, offering a waterproof barrier that prevents moisture penetration.  

Rabe recommends applying paint coatings in the winter months between 10am and 3pm, to allow the paint film to dry enough, preventing defects such as surfactant leaching or scum formation when exposed to dew formation too soon after the application. Never paint when the day temperature is below 16°C and the surface must be at least 3°C above dew point. 

“Ideally one should avoid painting in cold and moist conditions. Paint dries faster in dry air, so steer clear of humid days,” adds Rabe. 

Rain and water resistance

South Africa’s summer rainfall regions, such as the eastern parts of the country, require paints that can withstand heavy downpours. Waterproofing properties are crucial to prevent water damage and peeling.  

Elastomeric and high-quality latex paints are excellent choices due to their superior water resistance and ability to maintain integrity under wet conditions. 

Wind and sand abrasion

In windy and sandy regions such as the Western Cape and parts of the Northern Cape, abrasive particles carried by the wind can erode paint surfaces.  

Choose durable, high-quality paints with a strong binding agent to withstand such wear. In general, textured paints will have a high dirt retention. A textured finish can help mask minor abrasions and maintain a fresh appearance longer. 

Environmental considerations

South Africa’s commitment to environmental sustainability encourages the use of low-VOC (volatile organic compounds) paints. These eco-friendly options reduce air pollution and are safer for both the environment and human health.  

Consider paints certified by recognised environmental standards to ensure you are making a responsible choice. 

Preparation and application

Proper surface preparation is essential, regardless of the weather conditions. Clean, dry and primed surfaces ensure better paint adhesion and longevity. 

In regions prone to heavy dew or high humidity, plan painting projects during drier seasons to avoid trapping moisture under the paint.
