Supplied by a.b.e. Construction Chemicals, the Dow Corning 993 structural glazing sealant and Dow Corning 813C weather sealant combination were specified for four new high-profile projects in Gauteng and one in KwaZulu-Natal.
This widely-specified duo has been selected for:
• 11 Alice Lane in Sandton.
• 72 Grayston Drive in Sandton (office block refurbishment).
• Allandale office building in Midrand.
• Sandton Skye Apartments in Sandton.
• Growthpoint, Illovo in Umhlanga Ridge.
“The panels for these flush-glazed unitised curtain wall systems were mechanically fixed to the structure after bonding the glass to aluminium frames with Dow Corning 993. The gaps between the glazed units were then sealed with Dow Corning 813C weather seal to provide total waterproofing,” explains Grant Batty, a.b.e national sales manager for silicones, sealants and adhesives.
A popular combination
The two-component, neutral curing silicone, Dow Corning 993, is specifically developed for the structural bonding of glass, metal and other building components, while Dow Corning 813C is a primerless, one-part, neutral curing, low-modulus silicone sealant, suitable for both interior and exterior applications, such as weather seals, expansion joints and perimeter joints.
“It has a joint movement capability of +50% as well as -50%, and provides excellent adhesion to glazed surfaces, concrete, masonry, brick, wood and some plastics,” states Batty.
The applicator for 72 Grayston Drive and Sandton Skye was Pam Fabricators, while Facade Solutions handled 11 Alice Lane, the Allandale Office Park and Growthpoint Illovo projects. Both are Dow Corning Specialist-approved Quality Bond (QB) members.
Dow Corning’s QB system ensures that all its members are fully trained and certified annually, and guarantees that members have the required expertise in producing state-of-the-art products, as well as installation skills.
To fabricate and assemble the aluminium-framed unitised glazed panels for the Alice Lane project, Facade Solutions established a mini-factory five levels underground. This on-site mini-factory was audited and received Dow Corning’s Quality Bond approval. A third product, Dow Corning 895 structural glazing sealant, was used for the replacement of damaged glass, when required.
For the 72 Grayston Drive project, a.b.e. also supplied epidermix 372, a two-component, solvent-free epoxy adhesive, to bond all external lighting to the glazed facade.
a.b.e., part of the Chryso Southern Africa Group, is the South African technical distributor of Dow Corning. The company is a global leader in silicones and silicon-based technology, with a product range in excess of 7 000.
