13 Eastern Cape school projects to kick off

The Independent Development Trust (IDT) is set to commence work to build and refurbish 13 different schools across the Eastern Cape as part of the government’s Accelerated School Infrastructure Delivery Initiative (ASIDI).

This initiative aims to eradicate the backlog in school infrastructure and provide basic services such as water, sanitation and electricity in order to create a conducive environment for learning and teaching. It will also replace schools constructed from inappropriate materials such as mud and asbestos through the implementation of the programme.

Tenders for the school projects were advertised last year and the evaluation is at an advanced stage, with some of the projects awaiting site handover instruction from the provincial Department of Education, national Department of Basic Education and the Department of Public Works.

The project scope
At the end of the IDT contract, the St Thomas Junior Secondary and Edward Zibi Senior Secondary Schools, both located at Mt Fletcher, and Luphindo Senior Secondary School in Maluti will be equipped with new administration, science and multi-purpose blocks, dining and nutrition centres, media centres and at least 14 classrooms, a reception room with toilets and two toilet blocks for the learners.

On both projects, the site works include provision for rainwater harvesting, parking areas, paving, retaining walls, ramps, stairs and related bulk earthworks.

Similar construction work will be undertaken at Prospect Junior Secondary School in Maluti, but not before the existing buildings have been demolished to create space for the new buildings. In the interim, classes will be held in five new temporary structures that will be erected.

At least 13 temporary classroom structures will also be in place at the Magadla Senior Secondary School, also in Maluti, while twelve new classrooms, four head of department (HOD) offices, a library, computer room and kitchen are in construction. In addition, five existing classrooms will be renovated and a high-level security fence will be erected around the school site.

Other schools included in the IDT contract of the programme are Mgomanzi Senior Primary, Stanford Senior Secondary, Hlankomo Junior Primary, Lingelethu Junior Primary and Ntukayi Senior Secondary Schools, all in Mbizana, as well as Cabane Junior Secondary School in Mt Frere and Butterworth High School in Butterworth.

On all these sites, construction work generally comprises bulk earthworks, open walkways, concrete aprons, storm-water channels, rainwater tanks on bases, security fencing and entrance structures. All new buildings will also get full electrical installations and existing electrical installations will be refurbished on existing buildings.

Full thanks and acknowledgement are given to the IDT for the information provided.
