The crucial role of construction joints

Floor construction joints or control joints help prevent and control any cracking that may occur after the pouring of concrete slabs. Control joints are cut into the concrete in 5m x 5m grids or in equal grids as specified by the engineer and enable movement for shrinkage, thermal fluctuations and loading to be controlled.

Movement joints

M.Trim manufactures movement joints in varying heights from 3mm to 22,5mm, manufactured in a range of different materials including aluminium, brass and stainless steel with a polyurethane infill of shore hardness 40 Shore A. The infill has excellent hydrolysis, good abrasion, chemical resistance and physical properties. These joints are designed to absorb 20% of the movement (expansion and contraction) equal to the width of the joint and are protected by a metal edge.

Soft joints

Conversely, soft joints offer no edge protection and need frequent replacement. Fortunately, M.Trim’s movement joints have been manufactured to last as long as the tiled or screed floor. The infill is available in Black, Grey and Beige.

M.Trim offers an inexpensive PVC option available in three types – compression, screed and movement joint. These joints are suitable for low pedestrian traffic and the infill is made from flexible PVC. They are available in black and grey and heights of 8mm, 10mm and 12mm.

So, for the next flooring project turn to M.Trim’s range of movement/expansion joints to extend the life of your floor.
