When quality products are used to service the needs of a high-traffic facility, the lifespan of the floor dramatically increases.

The complete restoration of the floors for Transnet, in Bay 11 at Koedoespoort, an 18-ton locomotive engine workshop, was undertaken by Verni-Speciality Construction Products. Established in 2001, the company specialises in acid proofing and corrosion protection of concrete, epoxy and polyurethane floor coatings, resin screeds, concrete repair and structural carbon fibre reinforcing, concrete waterproofing, crystal growth systems, bandaging systems and refractory linings.

“The existing floors at the Transnet facilities at the time had cracked concrete, a coating that had worn off and areas between the rails that needed to be lowered and repaired,” says Vernon Botha, Director at Verni. “The repairs were 200mm deep, while the floor is continuously exposed to high traffic, heavy loads and oil and diesel spillages.”

The project commenced in 2007 and once the repairs were carried out, the entire area was vacu-shot blasted to give it a dust-free surface. Verni applied its Supaflor* PU HD at a thickness of 9mm to the floor area of 4 015m². This responded to the needs of the client, who required a super-hard floor with a minimum of 60MPa compressive strength. According to Thys Fourie, Transnet’s Project Manager, the project was very professional due to the fact that the company was accustomed to working on large projects.

The colours chosen were based on Transnet’s brand colours, namely red and green, which Verni used to distinguish between working and moving areas. They also used yellow Polyurethane enamel for the demarcation lines, leaving the area clearly marked, neat and professional, while at the same time providing a safe working environment.

“Six years later, the area has 18-ton engines, is exposed to very heavy weights and the floors have no cracks and no problems, while continuing to perform to our satisfaction,” states Thys.
