Sealcon Systems, one of South Africa’s specialist industrial and commercial flooring contractors, recently used Mapei epoxy screeds to create an aesthetically-pleasing and durable floor surface at Johannesburg’s newest Woolworths Food at the ultra-chic The Nichol Shopping Centre.

“The trick was to supply a solution that not only looked good, but also catered for heavy foot traffic and the occasional pallet truck,” says Paul Nieuwoudt, Building Line Product Manager at Mapei South Africa. “We came up with the Mapefloor I 320 SL Concept, which features exceptional mechanical strength, resists harsh abrasion, and complies with the national flooring standard prescribed by Woolworths.”

The application process involved shot blasting the raw concrete surface with a porta pattern, after which, a multi-layered system consisting of primers and pigmented silica sands was applied. The final self-levelling epoxy screed with a granular effect was then applied using a trowel to attain an overall thickness of 3.2 millimetres.

The hardened surface of Mapefloor I 320 SL Concept is very smooth, and forms a continuous, flat floor which is easy to clean and sterilise. “Other on-going construction inside the store repeatedly damaged some sections, but due to the nature of the product, it was easily and quickly repaired by the contractor,” says Nieuwoudt.

This Mapei solution will be used next at the Woolworths Food in the Tyger Valley Shopping Centre.
