Spar partnered with Flowcrete to design a bespoke floor finish for their new SuperSpar store in Mpumalanga.

In order to impress its clientele in Mpumalanga, the new SuperSpar store, recently opened in Secunda, required a floor that offers not only a clean and durable surface, but also one that would be bright and decorative.

To achieve this, Spar partnered with resin-flooring manufacturer Flowcrete South Africa to design and install a new bespoke finish across the main shopping area, kitchen and butchery of the Secunda SuperSpar. The Tops Spar liquor store adjacent to the SuperSpar also received the bespoke finish.

Flowcrete South Africa supplied 2 800m2 of the seamless resin terrazzo system, Mondéco Earth in a wide range of attractive and complementary colours, including Snow, Pebble, Moonstone, Sea Green, Spring Green and Coral. This solution, as opposed to an epoxy alternative, was chosen because it offers an easy-to-clean finish, a long life span and almost unlimited design potential.

The system’s paint-by-numbers application method, where the outline is marked out using aluminium trim and then the resin material is poured into the designated sections, allows unlimited design versatility. Multiple colours can be easily applied across the floor in intricate shapes and patterns, making the Mondéco range the ideal solution for designers who want an out-of-the-ordinary, decorative floor.

Every Mondéco system from Flowcrete includes decorative, light reflective additives, which are added after the floor area has been diamond ground. Granite and flint were added to the resin terrazzo material within the SuperSpar and Tops Spar floors to create a pleasant dappled effect.

To showcase Spar’s corporate branding and colours, a crisp white surface was applied in the main shopping area, with organically curving shapes of different sizes in red, blue, green, cream and turquoise interspersed across the floor. The adjacent Tops Spar liquor store received a decorative, single-tone Mondéco Earth Snow surface to contrast the designs used in the SuperSpar.

Seamless resin terrazzo is quick and easy to clean, thanks to its seamless and impervious nature, minimising the tasks of the site’s cleaning staff and ensuring that customers are presented with a hygienic and blemish-free floor. The flooring system was designed to be durable, which means that the visuals won’t deteriorate when faced with the heavy foot traffic, point loading, impact, scuffs, scrapes and stains that floors in busy commercial facilities inevitably face.

Before the floor finish could be applied, the site’s concrete slab had to be levelled to SR1 to provide a substrate that the resin material would bond to and not disrupt the completed surface. Within the kitchen and butchery areas, the polyurethane floor coating Flowfresh MF was also applied as it maintains an hygienic, seamless surface despite the extreme temperatures, food by-products and cleaning chemicals that it is exposed to. The Flowfresh range has been HACCP International certified and also includes the antibacterial agent Polygiene.
