Media in Africa’s management team is comprised of four driven and inspired female leaders.

More than 30 years ago, Schalk Burger produced the first magazine dedicated to the South African flooring industry, the SA Floor Covering Journal, which blossomed into the great FLOORS in Africa magazine and grew into the extensive Media in Africa Group of today.

Even though Liezel van der Merwe, Managing Editor and Roxanne Mancini, Editor of FLOORS in Africa are centered at the very core of this publication, they are supported by two other dynamic female counterparts namely Marlene van Rooyen, Editor of WALLS&ROOFS in Africa and René Basson, Business and Marketing Manager of Intiem magazine.

According to Liezel, the company’s success lies in the fact that management believes in strength-based leadership. “As such, we focus on developing people through their core strengths and talents,” says Liezel. “This enables us to not only achieve success as individuals and as teams, but also as a company.”

Roxanne echoes the above sentiments and adds that women in management positions require both experience and tenacity in order to take a team further to achieve excellence. “Couple this with a supportive management team as well as individuals who are self-driven within their individual roles, and you can be guaranteed to achieve managerial excellence,” she enthuses.

“For companies, bringing more women into management brings a greater degree of diversity, thinking and ideas into that organisation and often shifts the focus towards innovation, the customers and people development, a key strategic area of business,” Marlene adds. “Women are not beneficiaries or bystanders of business – they are partners and equals. There is a certain perception of how women are or should be in management – a perception often not attributed to male counterparts.”

René goes on to say that a woman is created to give life and care for life, and as such, by her very nature, she poses the potential to be passionate, purposeful, entrepreneurial, and a strategic problem-solver. “These qualities are vital and at the very core of good leadership,” she states.

Each of these women are inspired leaders who are able to bring the very best out of their teams and direct them towards excellence.
