After several successful years in the flooring industry, one of its influential role players is retiring.
Looking back and reflecting on a highly successful career within the flooring industry, Roelf Verster, Sales Manager at Azura Distributors, highlights his journey in this sector and, while his retirement may have closed this chapter in his career, Roelf’s passion will continue to burn within him as he embraces the future and everything it holds.
Roelf’s entry into the flooring industry was in 1959 when he joined a major building materials merchant, Hunt, Leuchars and Hepburn, who supplied everything for a building except flooring.
“Fortunately, a few contacts approached me with a proposal to market new flooring material, namely laminate wood flooring,” explains Roelf. “Apart from the fact that the product was new, I was immediately excited by what I saw and jumped at this opportunity. This precipitated the formation of a new company, Azura Distributors, with the sole purpose of importing, marketing and distributing laminate flooring.”
He adds that Azura Distributors imported the first mechanical joining system for laminates, called the ‘click’ system. As the company continued to grow throughout the years, other products and materials were introduced, such as bamboo, engineered wooden flooring and, more recently, vinyl planks, with the aim of offering the best products at affordable prices while ensuring excellent customer service and technical advice.
In order to achieve and maintain these objectives, Roelf was one of the founding members of the South African Wood & Laminate Flooring Association, of which Azura still remains a proud member today. After several years of adding significant value to Azura Distributors, Roelf’s health challenges placed him in a position to retire. “My passion and dedication to Azura Distributors and their product offerings still remain today,” he concludes. “I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to have met several outstanding people in the industry and wish them and Azura Distributors well for the future.”
