Four Sika products were used in the refurbishment of a reservoir at Vaal Marina, situated on the banks of the Vaal Dam.
When Midvaal Water Company commissioned the refurbishment of a reservoir at Vaal Marina last year, four Sika products were specified in conjunction with the contractor for the sealing, crack-bridging and coating of the reservoir.
Vaal Marina is an inland marina and golf estate situated on the banks of the Vaal Dam in Southern Gauteng, one of the areas that receive bulk potable water from Midvaal Water Company, the regional service provider.
The Sika products specified were:
• Sikadur-52 ZA.
• The Sikadur-Combiflex SG system consisting of:
– Polyolefin (FPO) waterproofing tape.
– Sikadur-31 DW.
Filling the cracks
Sikadur-52 ZA, a two-part, solvent-free, low viscosity injection liquid based on high-strength epoxy resins, was used to fill all the structural cracks in both the wall and floor areas of the reservoir.
Suitable for both dry and damp conditions, it not only forms an effective barrier against water infiltration and corrosion-promoting media, but also structurally bonds concrete sections together. Sikadur-52 ZA is usable at low temperatures and provides shrinkage-free hardening.
Sealing expansion joints
To seal the wall expansion joints, Sika’s Sikadur-Combiflex SG system was applied. This system complies with numerous international standards, including contact with potable water.
The Sikadur-Combiflex SG system is a high-performance joint- and crack-sealing system consisting of a modified flexible polyolefin (FPO) waterproofing tape, bonded with Sikadur-31 DW, a moisture-tolerant, thixotropic advanced epoxy adhesive suitable for contact with drinking water.
Used for construction, connection and expansion joints on both dry or damp concrete surfaces, the Sikadur-Combiflex SG bandage system is easy to install and extremely flexible, making it the ideal joint-sealing system for many difficult and vertical applications. With excellent adhesion, it performs well in a wide range of temperatures and is weather- and water-resistant.
To minimise the effect of existing cracks in the structure, Sikalastic-152 was applied to the internal, exposed, concrete surfaces.
Since Vaal Marina is one of three towns lying along the 800km shoreline of the Vaal Dam, its reservoir could not be out of action for long. Fortunately for the contractor, who was working to a tight schedule, the ease of application of these high-performance Sika products enabled the project to be completed within time and within budget.
