Grice Bellars Architects called on Belgotex Floors for their expertise on the St. Anne’s College project.
Having established itself as an architectural practice in Pietermaritzburg, Grice Bellars Architects is continually involved in a wide range of work within the city as well as the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands region – both in the private and public sectors.
One of their successful projects is that of St. Anne’s College, Hilton. “As far as the building is concerned, the Indoor Centre at St. Anne’s College in Hilton is a new structure, designed specifically for three major sports at school: indoor hockey; basketball; and netball,” highlights Nick Grice of Grice Bellars Architects. “There is also a small gym. The project commenced in August 2014 and was completed at the end of August 2015, with a final project value of R17.0m.”
The sports centre covers a total of about 2 200m², of which the sports hall floor makes up 1 450m². A specialised multi-purpose floor was required that would be able to accommodate all three sports codes and their various technical requirements. In discussion with Belgotex Sports, Grice Bellars was advised to use Gerflor’s Sport M Evolution in the Taraflex Range, a cushioned vinyl finish with machine welded joints. “This is the flooring of choice in indoor centres in Europe, though not yet commonly used in this country,” says Nick. “The indoor Hockey World Cup that took place recently in Germany was played on a surface similar to this.”
Taraflex Sport M Evolution provides levels of comfort and safety suited to all types of sports and leisure activities. It offers > 30% shock absorption and comes standard with Protecsol a unique intelligent surface treatment.
Nick goes on to say that the substructure of the sports floor is a suspended powerfloated concrete slab. Prior to laying the vinyl finish, moisture levels were carefully monitored and based on readings taken by Belgotex Sport, a moisture barrier application was specified. As an extra precaution, a self-levelling screed was applied on top of the moisture barrier before the vinyl was laid. The resultant floor is an excellent fast surface for indoor hockey, which also provides some cushioning to help prevent damage to players’ joints.
The complex also contains a small gym which has been finished with Belgotex Berber Point 920, the same carpet that has been used on the seating surfaces in the sports halls. Berber Point 920 is versatile, rugged and reliable. It is a good-looking, resilient solution for any commercial application. Its durability and hardwearing performance continue to be proven worldwide. This superior structured needlepunch product is available in broadloom or as convenient ResinBac or NexBac Eco carpet tiles and is specified for commercial use.
Reflecting on this project, Nick concludes,” We have worked successfully with Belgotex in the past and we were very happy to be able to call on their expertise for this project.”
