High-quality, pre-painted aluminium ff2® cladding from Novelis is keeping Sandton City’s extraordinary facade and interior elegantly beautiful.
Preserving Sandton City’s aesthetic value since the last upgrade a few years ago, coil-coated aluminium sheets from Novelis Germany GmbH add to the sophistication of the shopping mall, both inside and out. These pre-painted aluminium sheets have a proven 40-year track-record worldwide under the brand name ff2®.
Inspired by the geographic features and the unique natural beauty of South Africa, the conceptual design of Sandton City’s renovation was planned by RTKL Architects and executed by MDS Architects.
Selected as the cladding material for the project, about 15 000m² of 2mm thick, pre-painted aluminium with a high-quality PVDF coating was installed to make up the larger part of the exterior facades.
To reflect the terra-related colours of the surrounding in its distinctive design, four copper colourings were chosen: Copper shine, copper metallic, copper-brown metallic and red-copper metallic. The coating on the back is in the same colours, with Novelis SP80, a particularly abrasion-resistant lacquer system.
Even in the interior construction, exclusive surfaces dominate. Pillars and escalators were also cladded in Novelis aluminium, replacing stainless steel, which proved to be too expensive. For this purpose, Novelis specially developed an aluminium alloy coated with SP80 clear lacquer. It can be excellently worked, especially for curving and edging, and it is scratch-resistant. At the same time, the decorative structured surface with its aluminium nature-look comes close to the stainless steel surface.
ff2® was specially developed by Novelis for facade applications. The various designs are weather-resistant and cost-effective, which makes it the ideal material for facade cladding. It is also 100% recyclable.
During the production in the coil-coating process, a constant colour and durable surface are achieved. A broad range of plain, metallic and special colours is available, and the easy formability of pre-painted aluminium ff2® offers architects and building contractors variety in the scope of designs, especially for facade cladding.
ff2® is non-flammable and has the classification A1 according to DIN EN 13501.
