Pre-fabricated roof trusses are used in the majority of housing in Southern Africa as well as in commercial and industrial settings.
Why?
MiTek’s Marketing Manager, Hennie Viljoen, points out that a pre-fabricated trussed roof is a fully engineered structure delivering a practical and versatile roofing solution that is a cost effective and speedy solution for roof framing. “When compared with a traditionally built roof will typically deliver considerable material savings often using 40% less timber,” he states.

“The importance of minimising site waste has never been greater, leading the majority of house builders to prefer pre-manufactured building components. Prefabricated roof trusses are manufactured offsite, in a factory-controlled environment, which ensures that high-quality products are delivered to site with a minimum of onsite work required,” Viljoen adds.

Many options
MiTek licenced fabricators use industry-leading design and engineering software with support from MiTek’s experienced team of technical experts. The company offers solutions for pre-fabricated roof trusses.

All MiTek structural connectors are made from galvanised steel varying in thickness from 1mm to 2mm dependant on the application. Stainless steel products can also be supplied on request.

Furthermore, MiTek’s sophisticated design and engineering software package analyses the forces that pass through each connection based on the load cases submitted in order to provide the safest solution.

With special engineering input from MiTek’s professional team of engineers it is possible to create some very large and unusual timber roof structures.

Ensuring structural connection
The 1mm galvanised M20 connector plate is extensively used in the manufacture of the majority of the roof trusses supplied by MiTek’s customers throughout the world.

The appropriate sized plate is specified by MiTek’s design and engineering software and is then pressed into the timber chords of the truss in factory controlled conditions with state of the art machinery.

All MiTek connector plates are manufactured under ISO9001:2015 guidelines.

The versatility of timber roof trusses:
Residential: Ideal for all types of roof structure applications from small to large spans, timber roof trusses are also well-suited for attics, creating extra living space at a lower overall building cost, a benefit still underutilised in South Africa.

Commercial: Timber roof trusses are suitable for most of commercial roof structure applications up to about 17m clear span, thereafter transportation can become challenging (site-splicing is however an option). They are also ideal for steep pitched roof structures.

Industrial: Possible to use timber in some scenarios (depending on truss span, roof pitch etc.). MiTek’s Ultra-Span light gauge steel framing option is generally better suited for industrial roof structures.

Extra-ordinary: With special engineering input from MiTek’s professional team of engineers it is possible to create some very large and unusual timber roof structures.
