To provide the necessary shading on the facade of the Ekurhuleni Head Office in Germiston, while still letting light into the building and without impairing the views through the windows, the architects from Studioe Design teamed up with Hunter Douglas Architectural SA, who was appointed for the design supply and installation of its Filigree sunscreens.
Filigree Type 2 sunscreens in a module of 70mm x 70mm were selected to provide the optimum sun control function. It was decided to fit the majority of the screens in a horizontal orientation, complemented by vertically-fitted screens in certain areas.
The Filigree screens filter light into the building without seriously impairing the view outwards through the windows, thus contributing to pleasant working conditions whilst reducing air-conditioning requirements.
Installation commenced in March 2017 and was completed at the end of June 2017, one month ahead of programme and within budget.
The Filigree screen is made up of two single vane slats that are punched and assembled in a vertical and horizontal position, and fitted into a specially designed surround profile which holds the assembled panel in position.
The aluminium slats are pre-painted with the aluminium surround profile available in mill finish, anodised or powder-coated finish. Aluminium is a light, strong and durable material that is also sustainable and environmentally friendly since it withstands the weather elements and is not corrosive.
The Filigree screens are available in a variety of standard cellular modules and blade pitch to meet the specific requirements of any elevation.
Hunter Douglas has been a specialist in providing sun control solutions in South Africa for well over 40 years. The company has developed a number of products, and the Filigree screen is a locally developed solution which provides an attractive and functional alternative to the traditional linear louvres.
