Choosing the right joint sealer for the right job entails the right training to ensure a project is a success.

Schiba Trading was recently contracted to replace sections of concrete flooring in the container area of Transnet’s Belcon Freight and Rail Depot in Bellville, Cape Town. Upon completion of the concreting phase, Sika’s David van der Ross was called on for advice on joint sealing for the area. Consequently, Sika recommended Sikaflex-11 FC+, a one-part, moisture-curing, elastic joint sealant based on polyurethane and used  in conjunction with Sika Primer-3N.

Since Schiba Trading had no previous experience with Sikaflex-11 FC+, Sika provided the relevant workers with full, on-site training that included surface preparation and product application.

Sika Primer-3N (3 x 1L), a one-component, epoxy-polyurethane, solvent-based primer was applied to all porous surface areas as it offers wetting-out properties and is suitable for use on matt-moist substrates.

All joints were sealed with Sikaflex-11 FC+ (200 x 600ml), a solvent-free, odourless sealant that provides bubble-free curing. It was one of the first products to incorporate Sika’s i-Cure technology that reduces emissions to protect the environment. i-Cure stands for “intelligent curing” and is the chemical basis for the new crosslinking technology for polyurethane sealants and adhesives.

To create a flawless sealant surface, Sikaflex-11 FC+ was smoothed off with a combination of water and surfactant.
