Editor and Managing Editor of FLOORS in Africa Magazine, Roxanne Mancini and Liezel van der Merwe, attended the opening on 3 June of three netball courts donated to the Daeraad School by Belgotex Floors. This school is dedicated to the education of girls with special education needs, behavioural problems and found in need of care and protection by the children’s court.

The Daeraad School is a worthy establishment that strives to teach learners responsibility, balanced lifestyle habits and maturity. Students are representative of all cultural and ethnic groups in South Africa and 75% of the learners come from disadvantaged backgrounds. The school has a social worker, psychologist and guardian teacher to help with their development.

The Daeraad School is also a part of the Floorcovering Installation Qualification that Belgotex supports. This national qualification enables the girls to learn how to fit floorcoverings. After school, Belgotex supports the girls in finding employment and provides financial support for accommodation during their first three months of work.

The school hosted four netball teams for the finals of the North Western MMLD (mild to moderate learning disabled) netball team on the day of the grand opening. Four schools, namely Oom Paul (Rustenburg); Die Wilge (Potchefstroom); Kleurhof (Klerksdorp) and Daeraad (Wolmaraanstad) competed in a fun, active and joy-filled day.

“The netball courts look amazing and it is truly a community project that many people will benefit from. None of the other schools in the area have a sports facility like this and surrounding schools have been invited to use the brand new courts for sporting events,” says Liezel.

Belgotex is committed to advancing the skills and business opportunities in the flooring industry. As such, one of the Belgotex Enterprise Development recipients was given the opportunity to learn how to build the netball courts from scratch and the Belgotex Technical Team demonstrated laying the turf once the surface was prepared. Tradesmen who work at the Daeraad School were included in the construction and were taught cement-mixing skills in the process.

Allan de Wit of Belgotex, who was the project manager for the netball courts, says that he is proud of what the team was able to achieve.

“This was a very rewarding experience because playing sport is positive and healing for children and young adults. I would like to thank Jimmy Maila and Desmond Paul for their fitting services as well as the technical support team who helped us bring this vision to life,” comments Allan.
