The comprehensive range of waterproofing products from Mapei South Africa is based on the renowned Mapelastic two-component cementitious mortar, which has over 20 years of successful application internationally.

For the past five years, the Mapei technical service team has been introducing the local construction industry to the benefits of the advanced building technology additives, sealants, adhesives and concrete performance chemicals that are available from the international Mapei Group. Offering market-leading performance and handling advantages, Mapei’s 1 400 products are recognised throughout Europe, America and the Far East.

Mapelastic is used for waterproofing and protecting major concrete structures, renders and cementitious screeds, such as on balconies, terraces, bathrooms and swimming pools. The cured layer of Mapelastic remains flexible under all environmental conditions, even down to minus 20°C, and is resistant to chemical attacks from sulphates, chlorides and carbon dioxide.

Some typical applications include waterproofing of bathrooms, balconies and swimming pools before laying ceramic tile finishes; waterproofing plasterboard and marine-grade plywood; providing a flexible smoothing layer for light-sectioned concrete structures and precast panels subject to minor deformation under load; and protection of reinforced concrete pillars, road and rail viaducts against carbon dioxide ingress.

Complementing Mapelastic is a variety of products to meet the need for surface preparation by sealing joints before Mapelastic is applied. For example, Mapeband is a rubber tape used to seal expansion joints and corners between adjacent walls, while Mapeband TPE is the ideal solution for the flexible sealing and waterproofing expansion joints and any cracks that are subject to movement.

The solution for waterproofing concrete surfaces subject to both positive and negative water pressure is Mapelastic Foundation, a two-component cementitious product that forms an elastic membrane. Typical applications are the waterproofing of manholes, underground car parks and sunken elevator wells, where resistance against water pressure is needed.

Mapelastic Foundation was used recently to provide 180m² of a non-bituminous roof covering for the roof at the Mikvah of the Great Park Synagogue in Houghton, Johannesburg. “It was the contractor’s first experience with Mapelastic Foundation,” comments Paul Nieuwoudt, Mapei South Africa’s product manager for building systems. “The product’s ease of use and general performance were so impressive that he has specified it for three future projects.”

Where there is a need for bituminous waterproofing, Plastimul and Pastimul 1K Super Plus are high-flexibility modified bitumen products with excellent adhesion to every kind of surface, together with a high level of crack bridging. Plastimul products are one component bitumen emulsions, which are ready to use. The Super Plus product contains polystyrene spheres and rubber granules for a crack-bridging capability greater than 2mm.

“Mapei’s unrivalled research and development produce user- and eco-friendly products that enable us to offer our clients world-class solutions for any waterproofing needs,” says Nieuwoudt. “We can provide an optimum solution for a wide range of structural and environmental conditions and ensure a long service life as a result.”
