Despite some challenges developers had to face during the construction of the Middelburg Mall, it is set to open to the public on 19 April. A revised design and construction programme and storm damage on the roof structure earlier this year did not delay the project and it will open 19 months after the groundbreaking ceremony in October 2010.
The 43 000m2 regional shopping mall is set to become one of Mpumalanga’s premier shopping centres upon opening. The mall has been constructed at a cost of R500 million, following the announcement in November 2011 that the size of the mall had been expanded by 10 000m2, with a view to allow for future expansion. The mall will be able to be extended to a total size of 55 000m2.

Corobrik supplied 710 000 face bricks and 118 000 pavers to the retail development. “These products were specifically specified by the architects and developers,” highlights Tino Pereira of WBHO Construction North, the building contractors for the mall development. “The facade of the mall comprises the Fynbos Rooi and Country Meadow face bricks, as well as some bag-washed clay-stock bricks. The external areas of the mall have been paved with Champagne, Nutmeg and Tuscan pavers in an orthodox paving pattern,” explains Pereira.
The Middelburg Mall is a single-level shopping centre with 2 400 parking bays available for shoppers. Retail centre developers and investors Flanagan & Gerard Property Development and Investment and the Moolman Group have driven the development of the Middelburg Mall. “The mall is tenanted to provide comprehensive retail space to the growing and ever more affluent community of Middelburg and its surrounding areas. We are confident that it also has sufficient critical mass to attract consumers from a wide trade area,” states the Moolman Group’s Jannie Moolman.

Easy access to the mall was incorporated when the mall’s location was selected. It is situated off the N4 highway with access through both the Fontein Street off-ramp and Tswelopele Avenue. With its great visibility, the shopping centre is already a landmark in the area. “The mall is a retail asset that meets the needs of both consumers and retailers by bringing them together,” says Patrick Flanagan of Flanagan & Gerard Property Development and Investment. “The Middelburg Mall will provide the underserviced shoppers of the area with an easily accessible, quality shopping experience,” he continues.
The design of the mall ensures shopper flow and aesthetic appeal. Bright high-ceilinged spaces are lined with modern shop-fronts to create a fresh shopping experience.
