The Daytona Car showroom in Melrose Arch showcases luxury vehicles, sports cars and supercars. In mid-November 2018, DMR Group, the contract managers, appointed Derrington Floors to supply and install the new showroom’s flooring with an innovative, high-impact floor that would match the aesthetic of their luxury supercar dealership.

The brief from the client was to install a chevron floor that could withstand the expected amount of foot traffic as well as the weight of the luxury cars being parked on the floors.

The floor was divided into two sections. A circular section of approximately 30m² has an oak herringbone floor laid in a brick pattern. The other section is 200m² of Suntups engineered oak chevron flooring from FloorworX. Both floors were glued down using Wakol floor glue and then site stained with Loba Procolour to the client’s requirements. Next, the floor was sealed with two coats of Loba WS 2K Duo Matt, a commercial grade, two-component, water-based floor sealer.

Neil Smith from Derrington Floors says one of the more challenging parts of the project was getting the trim around the edges of the herringbone floor planks right – especially around the circular floor.

“Herringbone floor planks are rectangular, while chevron ones have a point in them. When chevron planks are installed, the joints make a straight line, whereas a herringbone plank creates a zigzag line. With the installation of the chevron floor – over three thousand individual pieces of flooring were used – the difficulty was to keep all the lines straight and the points of the each floor plank lining up with each other, made particularly challenging when having to go around the coffee bar and stairwell and then meet up again in the middle” says Neil.

The project was completed in 15 days, with the new floor being ready for the very happy client early in December 2018.

Neil says that they have been using engineered floors for a number of years because of the benefits that this flooring type offers.

“Engineered floors are often our number one choice thanks to the stability of the floor. These floors don’t move, expand and contract nearly as much as solid wood flooring does with normal humidity and temperature changes. We have been working with the Suntups brand for over 10 years and they always provide high quality products and a great service,” concludes Smith.
